WCS PROPOSES TO USE NASA SUPPORT TO CONVENE A TECHNICAL WORKSHOP TO RE-ENERGIZE THE CONSERVATION REMOTE SENSING WORKING GROUP, THEREBY ENHANCING CONSERVATION EFFECTIVENESS THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF INNOVATIVE REMOTE SENSING TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES. MUCH OF THE PANEL AND POST-PANEL DISCUSSION AT THE NASA BIODIVERSITY AND ECOLOGICAL FORECASTING TEAM MEETING FOCUSED ON THE LACK OF COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES BETWEEN SCIENTISTS, ACADEMICS AND NGOS. THIS HAS LED TO A WIDENING DISJUNCTURE BETWEEN THE INNOVATIVE REMOTE SENSING RESEARCH CONDUCTED BY NASA AND UNIVERSITY SCIENTISTS, AND THE APPLIED REMOTE SENSING WORK NEEDED BY NGOS TO SOLVE CRITICAL CHALLENGES TO SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT. REVIVING AND REINVIGORATING THIS MULTI-ORGANIZATIONAL WORKING GROUP WILL ALLOW FOR GREATER COMMUNICATION AMONGST REMOTE SENSING SCIENTISTS AND PRACTITIONERS, AND WILL CREATE A CRITICAL LINK BETWEEN THE NOVEL AND VISIONARY WORK OF REMOTE SENSING SCIENTISTS AND ON-THE-GROUND CONSERVATION PROJECTS. FURTHERMORE, THE WORKING GROUP WILL FOSTER BETTER COMMUNICATION AMONG GROUPS, THEREBY POSITIONING RESEARCHERS TO BENEFIT FROM NGOS WEALTH OF FIELD KNOWLEDGE AND DATA, AND PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR NGOS TO WORK WITH SCIENTISTS TO SECURE SUPPORT FOR COLLABORATIVE, CONSERVATION-RELEVANT PROJECTS. IN ORDER TO RE-ESTABLISH AND REINVIGORATE THIS WORKING GROUP, WE PROPOSE AN INITIAL CONFERENCE TO IDENTIFY THE 10 HIGHEST PRIORITY CONSERVATION QUESTIONS OR CHALLENGES THAT CAN BEST BE ANSWERED OR RESOLVED USING REMOTE SENSING TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGIES. EFFECTIVELY, THIS IS A FORMAL CONTINUATION OF THE DISCUSSION STARTED BY THE QUESTIONS POSED TO THE CONSERVATION NGO PANEL AT THE NASA BIODIVERSITY AND ECOLOGICAL FORECASTING TEAM MEETING. WE PROPOSE TO BRING TOGETHER A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE, REPRESENTING THREE CORE GROUPS CONSERVATION PRACTITIONERS, ACADEMICS, AND REMOTE SENSING SCIENTISTS FOR A 2-3 DAY PRACTICAL CONFERENCE. THIS CONFERENCE WILL BE DESIGNED TO BOTH FOSTER DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN SCIENTISTS, ACADEMICS AND NGOS AND GENERATE THE FIRST TANGIBLE PRODUCT OF THE WORKING GROUP THE TOP TEN QUESTIONS LIST. FOR EACH QUESTION ON THE LIST, CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS WILL CHARACTERIZE (1) WHY IT IS OF CRITICAL IMPORTANCE TO CONSERVATION; (2) THE INFORMATION OR DATA THAT WILL BE NEEDED; AND (3) THE REMOTE SENSING APPROACHES THAT MIGHT BEST BE EMPLOYED TO APPROACH THE QUESTION. RESULTS OF THIS CONFERENCE WILL BE PRESENTED TO THE BROADER COMMUNITY THROUGH A PEER-REVIEWED JOURNAL ARTICLE IN AN EFFORT TO DRIVE COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS FOCUSED ON TARGETING THESE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS.
