BAMBOO-DOMINATED FORESTS IN SOUTHWESTERN AMAZONIA ENCOMPASS AN ESTIMATED 180,000 KM2 OF PRIMARY TROPICAL LOWLAND FOREST CENTERED ON SOUTHEASTERN PERU AND SOUTHWESTERN BRAZIL. THIS AREA IS ROUGHLY EQUIVALENT TO 0.5% OF EARTH'S FORESTS AND FOSSILIZED EVIDENCE POINTS TO THE LONG HISTORY (>46,000 YEARS) OF THIS NATIVE HABITAT. DESPITE THE LARGE EXTENT OF THE BAMBOO FORESTS, THEY REMAIN NEARLY UNKNOWN AS THEIR EXISTENCE IS OFTEN REGARDED INCORRECTLY AS ONE OF AN INCONSEQUENTIAL HABITAT. THE RESEARCH PROGRAM OUTLINED HERE USES A COMBINATION OF SATELLITE IMAGE ANALYSIS AND FIELD MEASUREMENTS TO ANALYZE THE BAMBOO FORESTS ACROSS MADRE DE DIOS (MDD), PERU; AN 85,000 KM2 REGION OF THE AMAZON BASIN. THREE QUESTIONS WILL BE ADDRESSED THAT ARE CENTRAL TO UNDERSTANDING THE CARBON DYNAMICS OF THESE FORESTS AND ITS EFFECTS ON AMAZONIAN ECOSYSTEMS: (1) WHAT IS THE AREAL EXTENT OF BAMBOO DOMINATED FOREST IN SOUTHEASTERN PERU? OBTAINING AN ACCURATE ESTIMATE IS VITAL TO OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE CARBON CYCLE, BIOGEOGRAPHY, AND BIODIVERSITY OF AMAZONIA, AS THESE FORESTS ARE DISTINCT IN THEIR STRUCTURE, DYNAMICS, AND DIVERSITY. (2) WHAT IS THE LANDSCAPE VARIATION IN DENSITY OF BAMBOOS AND TREES? ALL PREVIOUS EFFORTS HAVE CATEGORIZED THE BAMBOO-DOMINATED FORESTS AS A HOMOGENEOUS ENTITY, BUT DENSITY OF BAMBOO AND ITS SUBSEQUENT EFFECT ON TOTAL BIOMASS HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE VARIABLE AT ALL SPATIAL SCALES. (3) WHAT IS THE BIOMASS AND CARBON-CONTENT OF THE BAMBOO DOMINATED FORESTS? ANALYSES OF BAMBOO FORESTS IN BRAZIL HAVE DISCOVERED THAT A COMBINATION OF FACTORS RESULT IN A DECREASE OF ABOVEGROUND BIOMASS BY ~ 39-56%. IN THE AMAZON BASIN, AN AREA HOLDING 100 BILLION TONS OF CARBON, THIS UNCERTAINTY HAS LARGE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE REGIONAL CARBON BALANCE. FALSE COLOR LANDSAT (E)TM COMPOSITES ARE CAPABLE OF IDENTIFYING BAMBOO FORESTS SW AMAZONIA DURING ~15 YEARS OF ITS 28 YEAR LIFECYCLE. TWO METHODS OF REMOTE SENSING CLASSIFICATION WILL BE EMPLOYED TO ESTIMATE THE AREAL EXTENT, DENSITY AND BIOMASS OF THE BAMBOO FORESTS IN MDD: (A) MULTIPLE DATE ANALYSES USING THE EXTENSIVE TEMPORAL ARCHIVE OF LANDSAT (E)TM AND MSS IMAGERY ARE NECESSARY DUE TO THE BAMBOO S PATTERN OF SPECTRAL VISIBILITY. (B) SPECTRAL MIXTURE ANALYSIS (SMA) IS A METHODOLOGY CAPABLE OF UNMIXING EACH PIXEL IN TERMS OF ITS FUNDAMENTAL SPECTRAL COMPONENTS (ENDMEMBERS) YIELDING ESTIMATES OF PERCENT COVER AT FINER RESOLUTIONS THAN THAT OF THE SENSOR. TO DATE, I HAVE MEASURED OVER 6,000 BAMBOO AND 2,000 TREE STEMS ACROSS TEN 0.36-HA PLOTS AND TWENTY-NINE 0.04-HA ACROSS MDD, COLLECTING MEASUREMENTS OF BAMBOO PRESENCE-ABSENCE, CULM-STEM DENSITIES, AND ALLOMETRICALLY DERIVED BIOMASS. SPECTRAL FRACTIONS OF THE ENDMEMBERS (I.E., GREEN VEGETATION, NON PHOTOSYNTHETIC VEGETATION AND CANOPY-DRIVEN SHADOW), WILL BE ANALYZED ACROSS THE TIME SERIES OF LANDSAT IMAGERY OF MDD. THIS DATA WILL SERVE AS INPUT INTO TRADITIONAL CLASSIFICATION ALGORITHMS TO GENERATE REGIONAL MAPS OF THESE FOREST PROPERTIES. ONCE THESE RELATIONSHIPS ARE ESTABLISHED, THEY WILL BE SCALED FROM THE STAND LEVEL TO GENERATE REGIONAL SCALE ESTIMATES OF STRUCTURE, COMPOSITION AND CARBON CONTENT (BIOMASS) FOR THE ENTIRE MDD REGION, AS WELL AS PROVIDE A NOVEL TECHNIQUE FOR MAPPING THE REMAINING BAMBOO-DOMINATED FORESTS OF SW AMAZONIA. ALL RESEARCH PROPOSED HERE IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RESEARCH OBJECTIVES TO QUANTIFY GLOBAL LAND COVER CHANGE AND TERRESTRIAL AND MARINE PRODUCTIVITY AND IMPROVE CARBON CYCLE AND ECOSYSTEM MODELS OF THE EARTH SCIENCE AREA OF NASA'S SMD.
