LAND COVER JS THE BJOPHYSJCAL COVER OF THE EARTH SURFACE, COMPRISING VEGETATION, BARE SOIL, WATER BODIES AND MAN-MADE SURFACES. LAND COVER CHANGE RESEARCH JS AIMED AT DETERMINING THE DRIVERS AND PROCESSES OF LAND COVER CHANGE, UNDERSTANDING THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIOECONOMIC IMPACTS OF LAND USE CHANGE AND PREDICTING THE CONSEQUENCES OF FUTURE LAND USE CHANGE. CHARACTERIZING LAND COVER CHANGES IS A REQUIREMENT FOR DISTINGUISHING THE ROLE OF CLIMATE VERSUS DIRECT HUMAN DRIVERS OF GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE. LAND COVER PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN THE EXCHANGES O F T HE LAND SURFACE WITH THE ATMOSPHERE, AND AS SUCH CONTRIBUTES TO THE REGULATION OF THE HYDROLOGJC AND ENERGY CYCLES. LAND COVER ALSO MEDIATES THE CARBON CYCLE THROUGH THE PROCESSES OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS, CARBON SEQUESTRATION, AND PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN CARBON EMISSIONS (THROUGH DEFORESTATION, WILDFIRES, ETC.). SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING PROVIDES A UNIQUE MEANS FOR MAPPING AND MONITORING LAND COVER CHANGE IN A CONSISTENT AND REPEATABLE FASHION. THE COMBINATION OF REMOTE SENSING WITH ECOSYSTEM PROCESS MODELS AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC INFORMATION IS USED TO INVESTIGATE THE DRIVERS OF THE CHANGES, PREDICT FUTURE LAND COVER CHANGES, AND EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF SCENARIOS OF FUTURE CLIMATES AND LAND COVERS TO ECOSYSTEMS, INFORMING MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION STRATEGIES TO GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE. UNDER THIS COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT, RESEARCH WILL ADDRESS VARIOUS ASPECTS OF LAND COVER CHANGES ABOVE DESCRIBED, WITH FOCUS ON BOTH NATURAL AND HUMAN-DOMINATED ECOSYSTEMS, OVER A VARIETY OF SPATIAL SCALES AND GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS, FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL SCALE.
