    THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS FUNDS TO PLACE OUTSTANDING AND UNIQUELY QUALIFIED TEACHERS WITHIN THE OFFICES OF THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION AS PARTICIPANTS IN THE ALBERT EINSTEIN DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. THE FRAMEWORK OF THIS PROPOSAL ALIGNS WITH THE OBJECTIVES OF NASA'S SUPPORT FOR INFORMAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS, AS IDENTIFIED IN THE 2011 COMPETITIVE PROGRAM FOR SCIENCE MUSEUMS AND PLANETARIUMS (CP4SMP+) SOLICITATION. THE EINSTEIN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IS SPECIFICALLY IDENTIFIED AS A PROGRAM THAT BUILDS STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS AND LINKAGES BETWEEN STEM FORMAL AND INFORMAL EDUCATION PROVIDERS . . . (CP4SMP+ P. 15) EDUCATORS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM COME FROM DIVERSE TEACHING BACKGROUNDS, INCLUDING GRADE LEVEL, YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, SCHOOL TYPE, AND STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS. EACH COHORT OF FELLOWS REPRESENTS DIVERSITY IN GENDER, ETHNICITY, AND GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION. FELLOWS PROVIDE PRACTICAL INSIGHTS AND REAL WORLD PERSPECTIVES AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE TO PROGRAM OFFICES AND MANAGERS IN AN EFFORT TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES OF THE OFFICE OF EDUCATION (OED), THE NASA AERONAUTICS RESEARCH MISSION DIRECTORATE (ARMD), AND THE EDUCATION CENTER AT GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER (GODDARD). IN SUPPORTING FELLOWS, NASA WILL GAIN A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR K-12 EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH AND A DIRECT UNDERSTANDING OF THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND PRACTICES OF CLASSROOM TEACHERS. THE ALBERT EINSTEIN DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR FELLOWSHIP ACT OF 1994 ESTABLISHED THE PROGRAM IN RESPONSE TO THE NEED FOR TEACHERS TO BE PART OF THE EDUCATION REFORM EFFORT, AND GAVE ADMINISTRATIVE AUTHORITY TO THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE) WHILE AUTHORIZING THE PLACEMENT OF FELLOWS AT NASA, AS WELL AS OTHER AGENCIES AND ON CAPITOL HILL. THE TRIANGLE COALITION FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION IS CONTRACTED BY DOE TO MANAGE THE PROGRAM. THE INTELLECTUAL MERIT OF THE EINSTEIN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IS PREDICATED ON ITS STRONG PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TEACHER LEADERSHIP COMPONENTS. BY PROVIDING A VENUE FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT BEYOND THE CONFINES OF THE CLASSROOM, THE PROGRAM AFFORDS TEACHERS A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE TO AND LEARN ABOUT EDUCATIONAL POLICIES, PRACTICES AND PROGRAMS AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL - A GOAL CONSISTENT WITH THE OBJECTIVES OF THE AMERICA COMPETES ACT AND OTHER FEDERAL INITIATIVES. KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED DURING THE FELLOWSHIP IS REGULARLY SHARED WITH COLLEAGUES, LOCAL AND STATE LEVEL EDUCATION ADMINISTRATORS, STUDENTS AND FAMILIES BOTH DURING THE YEAR AND UPON THE FELLOWS' RETURN TO THEIR CAREERS IN EDUCATION THEREAFTER. BROADER IMPACTS, SUCH AS PROMOTING EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING, TRANSPIRE WHEN K-12 EDUCATORS ARE EMBEDDED IN THE NATIONAL EDUCATION FOCUS AT NASA. EACH FELLOW GAINS INSIGHT INTO THE FEDERAL LEVEL FORCES THAT ACT UPON AND WITHIN THE K-12 TEACHING PROFESSION. FELLOWS OFTEN SEEK INPUT FROM BROADER GROUPS OF COLLEAGUES TO EMPLOY BROADER PARTICIPATION IN NASA PROGRAMS. THE TEACHERS WHO SERVE AS FELLOWS GAIN CONFIDENCE IN THEIR ABILITY TO CONVEY THE BENEFITS OF NASA S EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN A VARIETY OF FORUMS AND BECOME ADVOCATES FOR OTHER TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND PARENTS TO EXPLORE THE OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE TO THEM THROUGH NASA EDUCATION INITIATIVES. LEARNING AND TEACHING OCCUR IN NASA OFFICES FOR THE SUPERVISOR, STAFF AND THE FELLOW AS A MATTER OF DAILY DISCOURSE, MAKING THE BENEFITS OF THESE BROADER IMPACTS MUTUAL.
