    THE SOUTHEAST ASIA COMPOSITION, CLOUD, CLIMATE COUPLING REGIONAL STUDY (SEAC4RS) WILL FOCUS ON THE ROLE OF THE ASIAN MONSOON CIRCULATION AND CONVECTIVE REDISTRIBUTION IN GOVERNING ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION AND CHEMISTRY. THE DEEP CONVECTIVE CLOUDS AND CHEMISTRY (DC3) FIELD CAMPAIGN WILL INVESTIGATE THE IMPACT OF DEEP, MID-LATITUDE CONTINENTAL CONVECTIVE CLOUDS, INCLUDING THEIR DYNAMICAL, PHYSICAL, AND LIGHTNING PROCESSES, ON UPPER TROPOSPHERIC (UT) COMPOSITION AND CHEMISTRY. THE UT AND LOWER STRATOSPHERE (LS) HAVE VERY DIFFERENT CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONS RESULTING IN STRONG GRADIENTS ACROSS THE TROPOPAUSE. FURTHER, THE UTLS IS A HIGHLY DYNAMIC REGION INFLUENCED BY A BROAD RANGE OF SCALES, FROM DEEP CONVECTION AND GRAVITY WAVES, TO TROPOSPHERIC WEATHER SYSTEMS AND THE STRATOSPHERIC LARGE-SCALE CIRCULATION. CONVECTIVE TRANSPORT IS A MAJOR PATHWAY FOR RAPIDLY MOVING CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS AND WATER FROM THE BOUNDARY LAYER TO THE UPPER TROPOSPHERE AND IN SOME CASES TO THE LOWER STRATOSPHERE. YET THE IMPACT OF CONVECTIVE TRANSPORT ON THE UTLS COMPOSITION AND CHEMISTRY HAS NOT BEEN FULLY CHARACTERIZED ON EITHER THE GLOBAL OR CONTINENTAL SCALE. ONE OF THE PRIMARY SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES OF SEAC4RS IS TO INVESTIGATE THE INFLUENCES AND FEEDBACKS THAT AEROSOL PARTICLES FROM ANTHROPOGENIC POLLUTION AND BIOMASS BURNING HAVE ON MICROPHYSICAL CHANGES IN CLOUDS. IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SCIENTIFIC GOAL, THE EXTENSIVE SUITE OF CHEMISTRY AND AEROSOL INSTRUMENTATION ON THE DC-8 NEEDS TO BE PAIRED WITH A STATE-OF-THE-ART SUITE OF MICROPHYSICAL INSTRUMENTS. SPEC PROPOSES TO INSTALL, OPERATE AND PROCESS DATA FROM CLOUD PARTICLE IMAGER (CPI) AND 2D-S PROBES, BOTH OF WHICH HAVE BEEN INSTALLED ON THE DC-8 AND SEVERAL OTHER RESEARCH AIRCRAFT, AND ADDITIONALLY, THREE NEW CLOUD PARTICLE PROBES: A FAST CLOUD DROPLET PROBE (FAST CDP), A HIGH VOLUME PRECIPITATION SPECTROMETER (HVPS) AND A CLOSED-CELL CLOUD EXTINCTIOMETER THAT MEASURES EXTINCTION COEFFICIENT AT 9 WAVELENGTHS. THE NEW INSTRUMENTS HAVE ALL BEEN FLIGHT-TESTED ON THE SPEC LEARJET. THE SPEC INSTRUMENTS COMPRISE AN UNPRECEDENTED SUITE OF MICROPHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS. THE FCDP, 2D-S AND HVPS, WHICH TOGETHER COVER THE SIZE RANGE FROM 1 MICRON TO SEVERAL CENTIMETERS, HAVE ALL BEEN DESIGNED TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECTS OF ICE PARTICLES SHATTERING ON THE PROBE TIPS, AND ALSO UTILIZE SOPHISTICATED PARTICLE ARRIVAL-TIME ALGORITHMS TO FURTHER REMOVE SHATTERED PARTICLES. THE CPI IS THE ONLY DIGITAL IMAGING PROBE CAPABLE OF DISTINGUISHING CLOUD DROPS FROM ICE PARTICLES, IDENTIFY THE EARLY ONSET OF COALESCENCE, AND AUTOMATICALLY CLASSIFY ICE CRYSTAL HABITS. IN ADDITION TO SUPPLYING STATE-OF-THE-ART MICROPHYSICAL INSTRUMENTATION FOR THE DC-8, SPEC WILL COMBINE THE CLOUD PARTICLE MEASUREMENTS INTO A COMPOSITE SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND COMPUTE EXTINCTION, LIQUID AND ICE WATER CONTENT, EFFECTIVE RADIUS AND EQUIVALENT RADAR REFLECTIVITY. THESE DATA, ALONG WITH OPTICAL PROPERTIES DERIVED FROM THE CPI, WILL BE INPUT INTO A RADIATIVE TRANSFER MODEL TO COMPUTE HEATING PROFILES IN DIRTY AND CLEAN CLOUDS. IN ADDITION, AVERAGED MEASUREMENTS WILL BE COMPARED STATISTICALLY WITH A TWO-MOMENT CLOUD-RESOLVING MODEL PROVIDED BY COLLABORATORS DRS. HUGH MORRISON AND WOJCIECH GRABOWSKI FROM THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH.

    IN PHASE II SPEC WILL DESIGN, FABRICATE AND FLIGHT TEST A STATE-OF-THE-ART COMBINED CLOUD PARTICLE PROBE CALLED THE HAWKEYE. HAWKEYE IS THE CULMINATION OF TWO DECADES OF INNOVATIVE INSTRUMENT DEVELOPMENT AT SPEC. THE NEW PROBE WILL MEASURE THE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF CLOUD AND PRECIPITATION PARTICLES, PROVIDE HIGH-RESOLUTION (2.3 MICRON PIXEL) IMAGES OF CLOUD PARTICLES AND REMOVE ARTIFACTS FROM ICE PARTICLE SHATTERING. THIS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY ECLECTIC COMBINATION OF TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED IN THREE EXISTING SPEC OPTICAL CLOUD PARTICLE PROBES: 1) A FAST FSSP, THAT MEASURES SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS FROM 1 TO 50 MICRONS AND RECORDS INDIVIDUAL PARTICLE STATISTICS AND REMOVE SHATTERED PARTICLES USING INTER-ARRIVAL TIMES, 2) A CLOUD PARTICLE IMAGER (CPI) WITH UPGRADED IMAGERY CAPABLE OF RECORDING UP TO 500 FRAMES PER SECOND, AND 3) A 2D-S (STEREO) PROBE THAT IS CONFIGURED WITH ONE CHANNEL TO PROVIDE FULL-VIEW IMAGES OF PARTICLES FROM 10 MICRONS TO 1.28 MM, AND A SECOND CHANNEL CONFIGURED TO PROVIDE FULL-VIEW IMAGES OF PARTICLES FROM 50 MICRONS TO 6.4 MM. THUS, USING PARTICLE DIMENSIONS ALONG THE DIRECTION OF FLIGHT WILL PRODUCE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS FROM 1 MICRON TO SEVERAL CM.

    THE EXPLOSIVE ERUPTION OF A VOLCANO UNDER THE EYJAFJALLAJ?KULL GLACIER IN ICELAND ON 14 APRIL 2010 BROUGHT AIR TRAVEL IN EUROPE AND ACROSS THE ATLANTIC TO A STANDSTILL. MILLIONS OF PASSENGERS WERE STRANDED FOR OVER A WEEK AND THE SHUTDOWNS COST THE AIRLINES $200 MILLION PER DAY. JET AIRLINER ENCOUNTERS WITH VOLCANIC ASH PLUMES HAVE RESULTED IN 90 KNOWN INCIDENTS OF DAMAGE TO ENGINES AND AIRFRAMES OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS. RESEARCH AIRCRAFT MEASUREMENTS FROM THE MT. ST. HELENS ERUPTION IN 1980 SHOWED THAT PARTICLES WITH DIAMETERS<0.1 MICRON WERE FOUND IN CONCENTRATIONS SIMILAR TO THOSE MEASURED IN AMBIENT AIR, BUT CONCENTRATIONS WITH DIAMETERS FROM 0.1 TO 30 MICRONS WERE UP TO 100 TIMES GREATER THAN IN AMBIENT AIR. A SAFE AND COST-EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO FLYING CONVENTIONAL RESEARCH AIRCRAFT INTO VOLCANIC ASH PLUMES IS TO INSTRUMENT A SMALL UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEM (UAS) THAT USES ELECTRIC MOTOR PROPULSION. IN PHASE I WE PROPOSE TO DESIGN AND LABORATORY TEST A NOVEL, STANDALONE SENSOR SYSTEM THAT CAN MEASURE THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION FROM 0.09 MICRON TO HUNDREDS OF MICRONS, RECORD HIGH-RESOLUTION DIGITAL IMAGES, AND COLLECT SAMPLES FOR POST-ANALYSIS OF THE COMPOSITION OF VOLCANIC ASH. IN PHASE II WE WILL INSTALL THE SENSOR PACKAGE ON A TETHERED BALLOON AND A SMALL ELECTRIC-POWERED UAS SUPPLIED BY VANILLA AIRCRAFT LLC. IN CONCERT WITH EXPERTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA AND THE UNIVERSITY OF COST RICA, WE WILL PERFORM A PILOT FIELD PROJECT MEASURING ASH SIZE DISTRIBUTION, RECORDING HIGH-RESOLUTION DIGITAL IMAGES, AND ANALYZING ASH COMPOSITION IN THE PLUME OF AN ACTIVE VOLCANO IN COSTA RICA.
