THROUGH INNOVATIVE PROJECTS, EVENTS, AND PUBLICATIONS, THE SPACE FRONTIER FOUNDATION (SFF), A U.S.-BASED NOT-FOR-PROFIT SOL(C)(3) ORGANIZATION, EDUCATES THE PUBLIC ABOUT AMERICAN ENTREPRENEURIAL SPACE COMPANIES ("NEWSPACE") AND THEIR EVOLVING RELATIONSHIP WITH NASA. THESE COMPANIES, ALONG WITH NASA, ARE DEVELOPING A SPACE ECONOMY WITH BROAD POTENTIAL FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT IN A LARGE NUMBER OF AREAS. THE FOUNDATION'S PROJECTS ALSO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PURSUE STEM CAREERS, THUS EXCITING THEM ABOUT NASA AND NEWSPACE TO ENSURE AN EXPANDING AND PROSPEROUS FUTURE IN SPACE. THE $100,000.00 GRANT REQUESTED IN THIS PROPOSAL FOR A NINE-MONTH PERIOD (MAYDECEMBER, 2011) WOULD BE USED TO INITIATE NEW SFF PROJECTS AND ENHANCE OTHERS. IN PARTICULAR, THE SFF WILL USE THE FUNDS REQUESTED TO DEVELOP A REPORT FOR DECISION-MAKERS IN SUPPORT OF CONGRESSIONAL DIRECTION IN PL 111-267 (SEC. 403 (B) (2 , WHICH REQUIRES NASA TO SUBMIT AN ASSESSMENT OF THE POTENTIAL NON-GOVERNMENT MARKET FOR COMMERCIALLY DEVELOPED CREW AND CARGO CAPABILITIES, BASED ON THE INPUT OF THOUGHT LEADERS AND OF COMMERCIAL SPACE PIONEERS, ESPECIALLY THE NON-GOVERNMENT USER COMMUNITY. A SUBSTANTIAL PORTION OF THE GRANT REQUESTED IN TLUS PROPOSAL WILL BE USED TO FUND PRIZES FOR AND SUPPORT THE EXECUTION OF A NEWSPACE BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION (BPC) AND BUSINESS PLAN BOOT CAMP DURING THE SFF'S NEWSPACE 2011 CONFERENCE, WHICH WILL BE HELD JULY 28-31, 2011 , AT THE NASA AMES RESEARCH CENTER. THE SFF, CONDITIONAL ON THE APPROVAL OF THIS GRANT, PLANS ON EXPANDING THE BPC BY HIRING CONTRACT LABOR FROM THE SPACE ANGELS NETWORK LLC (SAN), A PROFESSIONALLY MANAGED ANGEL INVESTING NETWORK WHOSE MEMBERS AND STAFF HAVE DIRECT EXPERIENCE EVALUATING AND INVESTING IN EARLY-STAGE AEROSPACE COMPANIES. SAN IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO PROVIDE THE SUPPORT, CREDIBILITY AND EXPERTISE TO PARTNER WITH SFF IN PRODUCING THE NEWSPACE BPC AND BOOT CAMP. THIS COMBINATION F A SPACE ADVOCACY AND DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE, A PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION, AND AN ANGEL INVESTMENT NETWORK IS UNPRECEDENTED AND SURE TO PROVIDE EXTRAORDINARY VAL UE. THE FOUNDATION, WITH OVER TWO DECADES OF BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH NEWSPACE COMPANIES, AND EXPERIENCE USING VOLUNTEER AND STUDENT LABOR TO MAXIMIZE EFFECTIVENESS FOR MINIMAL COST, IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO EDUCATE AND ADVOCATE CONCERNING NEWSPACE AND NASA. BELOW YOU WILL FIND DESCRIPTIONS OF THE PROJECTS AND SUPPORT STAFF THAT SFF PLANS ON USING THE GRANT TO SUPPORT, INCLUDING THE NEWSPACE BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION AND BOOT CAMP, SPACEVENTURES, THE WE-ARE-SPACE ONLINE VIDEO COMPETITION, AND THE STUDENT NEWSPACE BUSINESS COMPETITION.
