THIS PROPOSAL AIMS TO PROBE THE "CHIRALITY QUESTION" IN PREBIOTIC CHEMICAL SYSTEMS LEADING TO THE ORIGIN OF LIFE. PART I OF THE PROPOSED WORK IS BASED ON A CONCEPT THAT COUPLES RECENT FINDINGS IN TWO SEPARATE AREAS, INCLUDING PROGRESS TOWARD THE PREBIOTIC SYNTHESIS OF RNA AND EXTENSION OF OUR EUTECTIC MODEL FOR THE HOMOCHIRALITY OF BIOLOGICAL MOLECULES TO THE ENANTIOENRICHMENT OF SIMPLE SUGARS. PART II EXPLORES THE REACTIONS OF PART I IN A SECOND APPROACH TO ENANTIOENRICHMENT IN RNA PRECURSORS BASED ON THE "CHIRAL AMNESIA" PROCESS WE HAVE DEMONSTRATED FOR SOLID-PHASE ENANTIOENRICHMENT IN AMINO ACIDS. PART III EXTENDS THIS CHIRAL AMNESIA CONCEPT TO DEVELOP A "SYSTEMS CHEMISTRY" APPROACH TO PROBING COMPLEX MIXTURES OF AMINO ACIDS IN ORDER TO GENERALIZE HOW THE PROPERTY OF HOMOCHIRALITY MIGHT EMERGE FROM SUCH MIXTURES.
