BASIC DESCRIPTION FOR THE AWARD FROM CYCLE FIVE OF NASA ASTROBIOLOGY INSTITUTE (NAI) TO RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE (RPI) ENTITLED "SETTING THE STATE FOR LIFE: FROM INTERSTELLAR CLOUDS TO EARLY EARTH&MARS." THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR IS DR. DOUGLAS C. B. WHITTET. COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT COLLABORATION STATEMENT: 1260.51 COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT SPECIAL CONDITION. (OCTOBER 2000) (A) SEE FILE FOR TEXT. (B) THE TERMS "GRANT" AND "RECIPIENT" MEAN "COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT" AND "RECIPIENT OF COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT," RESPECTIVELY, WHEREVER THE TERMS APPEAR IN PROVISIONS AND SPECIAL CONDITIONS INCLUDED IN THIS AGREEMENT. NAI CENTRAL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR COORDINATING INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES, ADVOCATING THE NEEDS AND SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS OF THE MEMBERS OF THIS COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT, DISBURSING FUNDS (INCLUDING A STRATEGIC DIRECTOR S DISCRETIONARY FUND FOR HIGH-RISK/HIGH-PAYOFF RESEARCH PROJECTS AND FOR FOSTERING COLLABORATION BETWEEN MEMBERS), SPONSORING THE NAI POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM, COLLECTING AND ARCHIVING INFORMATION ON RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND PUBLICATIONS, ORGANIZING FOCUS GROUP MEETINGS AND WORKSHOPS, AND EXPEDITING NETWORK CONNECTIVITY WHILE ENGINEERING THE INTERFACES BETWEEN THE SCIENTISTS AND THE NETWORK. NAI CENTRAL IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR ORGANIZING GENERAL MEETINGS, WORKSHOPS, AND STRATEGIC RETREATS TO ENGAGE MEMBERS OF THE INSTITUTE IN INTEGRATED RESEARCH. NAI CENTRAL WILL, IN ADDITION, COORDINATE INSTITUTE-WIDE ACTIVITIES, IN EDUCATION AND PUBLIC OUTREACH, AND IN THE TRAINING OF STUDENTS AND OTHER YOUNG INVESTIGATORS. RPI PROPOSES A SYNERGISTIC AND INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAM OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH THAT WILL ADDRESS A CENTRAL ISSUE IN ASTROBIOLOGY: THE UNIVERSALITY AND EFFICACY OF KEY PATHWAYS THAT LEAD FROM ATOMS AND MOLECULES IN THE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM TO PLANETS AND LIFE. WE WILL INVESTIGATE THE EVOLUTION OF BIOGENIC COMPOUNDS FROM THE FIRST CHEMICAL REACTIONS IN INTERSTELLAR SPACE TO EXOGENOUS DELIVERY OF PREBIOTIC MOLECULES TO PLANETARY SURFACES. RPI WILL USE GEOCHEMICAL AND ISOTOPIC ANALYSES OF SAMPLES, INCLUDING LUNAR IMPACT MELTS AND TERRESTRIAL HADEAN-ARCHEAN ZIRCONS, TO DETERMINE (RESPECTIVELY) THE TIME LINE FOR IMPACT FRUSTRATION OF LIFE AND THE NATURE OF THE PRIMITIVE ATMOSPHERE AND OCEANS ON EARLY EARTH. WE WILL INVESTIGATE THE APPLICABILITY TO MARS OF GEOCHEMICAL METHODS USED TO PLACE TIME CONSTRAINTS ON PROCESSES AND EVENTS ON EARLY EARTH, AND WE WILL EXPLORE THE POTENTIAL ROLE OF MINERAL CATALYSIS IN PRODUCTION OF RNA AND OTHER PREBIOTIC MOLECULES ON BOTH PLANETS. RPI S RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE ESSENTIAL SUPPORT FOR PRESENT&FUTURE NASA MISSIONS. IN OUR QUEST TO UNDERSTAND THE PROCESSES THAT GIVE BIRTH TO NEW SOLAR SYSTEMS, WE WILL EXPLOIT ARCHIVAL DATA FROM THE SPITZER SPACE TELESCOPE, ONE OF NASA S FLAGSHIP GREAT OBSERVATORIES, AND PROPOSE NEW OBSERVATIONS WITH NASA S SOFIA. OBSERVATIONS WITH SPITZER AND SOFIA WILL INDENTIFY KEY TARGETS FOR FUTURE STUDY WITH THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE. THE DAWN MISSION GOALS WILL BE SUPPORTED, PROVIDING A CONTEXT FOR INVESTIGATION OF ASTEROID 1 CERES, WHICH EXPERIENCE LOW TEMPERATURE ALTERATION AND PROBABLE MODIFICATION OF NEBULAR&PRE-NEBULAR ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. (C) SEE FILE FOR TEXT.
