LAVA FLOWS THAT EMPLACE EMBANKING LEVEES DURING FLOW ADVANCE PROVIDE A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP NEW INFERENCES ABOUT THE FLOW RHEOLOGY, EMPLACEMENT TIME, VOLUME FLOW RATE AND RELATED VARIABLES. COMBINED WITH RECENT THEORETICAL ADVANCES, MEASUREMENTS OF THE APPORTIONING OF FLOW VOLUME INTO ACTIVE ADVANCING AND STATIONARY LEVEE COMPONENTS PROVIDE POWERFUL NEW CONSTRAINTS ON THE DYNAMICS OF SUCH FLOWS. THIS PROPOSAL IS EXPECTED TO QUANTITATIVELY EXPLAIN THE SIGNIFICANT EMPLACEMENT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LEVEED LAVA FLOWS ON THE MARS PLAINS VERSUS THOSE ON RELATIVELY STEEP SHIELDS. THIS TASK IS ALSO EXPECTED TO CLARIFY THE SOMEWHAT UNUSUAL ERUPTION HISTORY THAT EMPLACED NUMEROUS LEVEED FLOWS ON THE EASTERN FLANK OF ASCRAEUS MONS.
