CLOUDS PLAYA CRUCIAL ROLE IN DETERMINING OUR CLIMATE. WE PROPOSE TO USE DATA FROM THE CALIPSO AND CLOUDSAT INSTRUMENTS AND OTHER INSTRUMENTS ON A-TRAIN SATELLITES TO ADDRESS TWO IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: * DETERMINATION OF THE PHASE FUNCTION OF ICE CLOUD PARTICLES THE PHASE FUNCTION IS A KEY PARAMETER IN RETRIEVING OPTICAL DEPTH OF CLOUDS AS WELL AS IN DETERMINING THE RADIATIVE IMPACT OF THESE CLOUDS ON THE CLIMATE SYSTEM. THERE IS GREAT UNCERTAINTY ABOUT WHAT THE PHASE FUNCTION SHOULD BE USED FOR ICE .CLOUDS. WE PROPOSE A NOVEL METHOD USING CALIPSO AND MODIS DATA TO DETERMINE THE PROPER PHASE FUNCTION FOR ICE CLOUDS. * CREATE A CLIMATOLOGY OF CLOUD RADIATIVE FORCING, AND ANALYZE ITS VARIATION WITH TIME AND WITH ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES CLOUD RADIATIVE FORCING (CRF) IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT QUANTITIES FOR EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF CLOUDS ON THE CLIMATE. WE DETAIL A NEW METHOD TO CALCULATE THE CRF USING CLOUDSAT/CALIPSO DATA ALONG WITH CERES DATA AND NASA MERRA REANALYSIS. WE PROPOSE AS WELL AS HOW CRF VARIES WITH ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES (E.G., 500-HPA VERTICAL VELOCITY).

THE PURPOSE OF THIS MODIFICATION IS TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FUNDING TO HSHQDC-11-C-00116 IN ORDER TO INCREASE ADDITIONAL LEVEL OF EFFORT THAT IS WITHIN ORIGINAL SCOPE OF WORK, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ATTACHED REVISED STATEMENT OF WORK. AS A RESULT, FUNDING IS HEREBY INCREASED BY $65,386.00 FROM $300,870.00 TO $366,256.00. PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE IS HEREBY EXTENDED TO 03/13/2014. ALL OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS REMAIN UNCHANGED AND IN FULL FORCE AND EFFECT.

THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS A CONTINUATION OF THE PI'S LONG-TERM EFFORTS IN THE AREA OF THE OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF NONSPHERICAL AND INHOMOGENEOUS PARTICLES INVOLVED IN RADIATIVE TRANSFER AND REMOTE SENSING APPLICATIONS. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH BELONGS TO THE SOLICITED AREA OF INTEREST "THEORETICAL ALGORITHM ADVANCES". TO BE MORE SPECIFIC, THE PROPOSED RESEARCH HAS TWO PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: IMPROVEMENT IN THE ACCURACY AND COMPUTATIONAL EFFICIENCY OF THE EXISTING LIGHTSCATTERING COMPUTATIONAL SOFTWARE RESOURCES. DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MODELING CAPABILITIES IN TERMS OF BOTH METHODS AND COMPUTATIONAL PACKAGES TO SIMULATE THE OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF NONSPHERICAL AND INHOMOGENEOUS ATMOSPHERIC AND OCEANIC PARTICLES.
