LARGE LENGTH SCALE CAPILLARY FLOWS IN INTERIOR COMERS HAVE AN ESTABLISHED PLACE IN FLUIDSHANDLING OPERATIONS IN REDUCED GRAVITY ENVIRONMENTS. SUCH FLOWS ARE DRIVEN BY WETTING CONDITIONS AND THE OFTEN COMPLICATED GEOMETRY OF THE SYSTEM. A QUANTITATIVE AND FUNDAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING OF COMER FLOWS IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE MYRIAD FLUIDS MANAGEMENT TASKS ABOARD SPACECRAFT INCLUDING FLOWS IN LIQUID PROPELLANT AND CRYOGEN STORAGE SYSTEMS, LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS, PHASE-CHANGE THERMAL SYSTEMS FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROL AND POWER PRODUCTION, AND FOR MATERIALS AND BIOFLUIDS PROCESSING. RECENT ADVANCES IN THE ANALYSIS OF CAPILLARY FLOWS IN CONTAINERS WITH INTERIOR COMERS NOW PERMIT THE CLOSED FORM PREDICTION OF FLOWS IN A VARIETY OF PLANAR AND NONPLANAR COMERS, 2-D COMER NETWORKS, AND WEAKLY 3-D CONTAINERS SUCH AS CYLINDERS WITH IRREGULAR POLYGONAL SECTIONS AND CYLINDERS WITH COMPLEX VANED SECTIONS MODELS FOR CURRENT PROPELLANT MANAGEMENT DEVICES. THE ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS SERVE AS DESIGN TOOLS THAT CAN SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE DESIGN CYCLE TIME FOR LOW-G CAPILLARY SYSTEMS AND ALLOW NEW INSIGHTS INTO FLOW MECHANISMS LEADING TO DESIGNS WITH IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY WITHOUT A MASS PENALTY. IN THE CURRENT INVESTIGATION, THREE RESEARCH PATHS ARE PURSUED FOR THE 3 YEAR EFFORT ANTICIPATED: CAPILLARY FLOWS AND PHENOMENA, THE CAPILLARY FLOW EXPERIMENTS (CFE-1 AND CFE-2) ABOARD ISS, AND THE CAPILLARY CHANNEL FLOWS (CCF) EXPERIMENT A JOINT GERMANY-USA EXPERIMENT. THIS PROPOSAL REQUESTS SUPPORT TO CONTINUE GROUND-BASED RESEARCH IN SUPPORT OF FLIGHT EXPERIMENTS CFE-1, CFE-2, AND CCF: CFE-1 OF WHICH HAS BEEN COMPLETED ON ISS AND WITH TWO MORE PUBLICATIONS EXPECTED AND CFE-2 WHICH IS NOW IN THE FULL ISS EXPERIMENT STAGE WITH MORE EXPERIMENTS PLANNED WITH NEW TEST CELL BEING LAUNCHED TO ISS SHORTLY. CCF IS ALSO SCHEDULED FOR A THIRD AND FOURTH ROUND OF EXPERIMENTS ON ISS DURING THE 2012-2013 TIME FRAME. FOR THE CAPILLARY FLOW WORK IN GENERAL, ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS OF LARGE LENGTH SCALE CAPILLARY DRIVEN FLOWS IN SYSTEMS OF INCREASED GEOMETRIC COMPLEXITY ARE PURSUED: THESE INCLUDE FLOWS WITHIN SYSTEMS OF NONIDEALIZED COMERS, BIFURCATING AND COALESCING FLOWS IN CORNER NETWORKS, MULTIDIMENSIONAL IMBIBITION, AND PASSIVELY PHASES SEPARATING FLOWS. PARTICULARLY WHEN BUBBLES ARE PRESENT, SUCH FLOWS ARE UNIQUE TO THE LOW-G ENVIRONMENT, COMMONPLACE IN SPACECRAFT FLUID SYSTEMS, AND ADVANTAGEOUS IF EXPLOITED, YET AT TIMES OVERLOOKED DURING SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT. IN THIS WORK, USEFUL ANALYTIC EXPRESSIONS FOR KEY FLOW CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS TRANSIENT INTERFACE SHAPE, FLOW RATE, AND STABILITY WILL BE DETERMINED. DROP TOWER EXPERIMENTS ARE PROPOSED TO SUPPORT THE THEORETICAL ANALYSES. THOUGH THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS FUNDAMENTAL IN TERMS OF ANALYSIS AND EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION, EACH PROBLEM TO BE ADDRESSED HAS BROAD APPLICATION TO FLUIDS MANAGEMENT IN LOW-G AND TERRESTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS. FLIGHT EXPERIMENT DATA FROM CFE-2 OPERATIONS ABOARD ISS IS, HAS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE COLLECTED AND PUBLISHED. CCF WILL ALSO BE SUPPORTED, CREW AND EXPERIMENT PROCEDURES SPECIFIED, AND ALL CRITICAL REVIEWS AND EXPERIMENT OPERATIONS SUPPORTED THROUGH COMPLETION OFTHE EXPERIMENT.
