    THE PI AND COLLABORATORS WILL ADAPT AND COMBINE WELL DEVELOPED NUMERICAL TECHNIQUES TO SIMULATE, SELF-CONSISTENTLY, THE DYNAMICAL EVOLUTION OF SMALL AGGREGATE SOLAR SYSTEM BODIES ROTATIONALLY ACCELERATED BY RADIATION-RECOIL TORQUES (THE YORP EFFECT). THE SIMULATIONS WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN THE OBJECTS CAUSED BY THE YORP ACCELERATION, AND THE CHANGES IN THE YORP TORQUE RESULTING FROM THOSE STRUCTURAL CHANGES. THE TEAM WILL CONDUCT A SET OF NUMERICAL EXPERIMENTS TO ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING KEY QUESTIONS: (1) IS YORP ACCELERATION SELF-LIMITING? CAN AN AGGREGATE OR RUBBLE-PILE ASTEROID NATURALLY EVOLVE TO A SHAPE FOR WHICH THE TORQUE BECOMES NEGLIGIBLY SMALL, OR WILL YORP ALWAYS DOMINATE THE SPIN EVOLUTION? (2) DO SHAPE CHANGES INTERRUPT THE YORP CYCLE AND MAKE SPIN EVOLUTION STOCHASTIC? MOVEMENTS OF SURFACE MATERIAL CAN SIGNIFICANTLY ALTER YORP TORQUES; DOES THIS HAPPEN ON TIMESCALES SHORT ENOUGH THAT THAT THE CLASSICAL "YORP CYCLE" DEVOLVES INTO A RANDOM WALK? (3) DOES YORP ACTUALLY FORCE OBJECTS PAST MATERIAL-SHEDDING THRESHOLDS? YORP-DRIVEN MASS SHEDDING MAY BE A VIABLE MECHANISM BINARY ASTEROIDS ONLY IF YORP IS NOT SELF LIMITING AT AN EARLY STAGE. BUT IF YORP IS STOCHASTIC, RECURRING SHEDDING EPISODES COULD LEAD TO MORE COMPLICATED SYSTEMS. (4) DOES YORP-DRIVEN SHAPE CHANGE EXCITE A SIGNIFICANT POPULATION OF NON-PRINCIPAL AXIS (NPA) ROTATORS? HOW DOES THE EXPECTED NPA FRACTION DEPEND ON SIZE OR MATERIAL PROPERTIES. THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS IN EACH CASE WILL BE TESTED BY COMPARING AGAINST EXISTING DATA ON (A) THE PROGRADE/RETROGRADE SPIN RATIO AND OBLIQUITY DISTRIBUTION OBTAINED FROM MEASUREMENTS OF RADIATION-RECOIL-DRIVEN ORBITAL CHANGES (THE YARKOVSKY EFFECT); (B) THE MASS RATIO AND ANGULAR MOMENTUM DISTRIBUTIONS OF NEA BINARIES; AND (C) THE OBSERVED FRACTION OF NPA ROTATORS AS A FUNCTION OF SIZE. THIS PROJECT DIRECTLY ADDRESSES THE GOAL OF THE PLANETARY GEOLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS PROGRAM, TO IMPROVE THE UNDERSTANDING OF GEOLOGICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL PROCESSES ON SOLAR SYSTEM BODIES; SPECIFICALLY, RADIATION RECOIL EFFECTS ON THE NEAR EARTH ASTEROIDS. THE WORK APPLIES THEORETICAL MODELING TO THESE PROCESSES, AND WILL BE TESTED THROUGH PREDICTIONS OF THE DYNAMICAL EVOLUTION OF SMALL SOLAR SYSTEM BODIES AND COMPARISON WITH AVAILABLE DATA. THE RESULT WILL BE A MAJOR STEP TOWARD A UNIFIED UNDERSTANDING OF NEA DYNAMICAL EVOLUTION THAT CAN SIMULTANEOUSLY ACCOUNT FOR YARKOVSKY ORBITAL DRIFT RATES, BINARY DEMOGRAPHICS, AND OBSERVED SPIN STATES.

    THIS PROPOSAL COVERS THE DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION OF A PERFORMANCE-BASED FLIGHT DECK INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO IMPROVE HAZARD AND STATE AWARENESS WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY MONITORING THE ACCURACY, INTEGRITY AVAILABILITY AND CONTINUITY OF THE SOURCE INFORMATION THAT IS BEING USED BY THE DECISION-MAKERS THROUGH THE ALERTING AND NOTIFICATION FUNCTIONS. THE PROPOSED INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WILL BE HOLISTIC IN THE SENSE THAT IT WILL USE DATA AVAILABLE THROUGH SWIM, ONBOARD SENSORS AND AVIONICS, SENSORS ON OTHER AIRCRAFT OR ON THE GROUND (TRANSMITTED TO OWNSHIP VIA SOME DATALINK), AND DATABASES TO RECOGNIZE HAZARDOUS FLIGHT CONDITIONS, ENERGY STATE, OR DATA SOURCES. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL ADDRESS INTEGRATION STRATEGIES THAT WILL NOT ONLY INCLUDE STOCHASTIC MONITORING FUNCTIONS BUT ALSO APPROACHES THAT RESEMBLE THE MANNER IN WHICH HUMAN CREWS EVALUATE MULTIPLE SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND DETECT PROBLEMS THROUGH INFERENCE. THE BASIC APPROACH IS AS FOLLOWS; ACCIDENT DATA FROM VARIOUS SOURCES (I.E. CAST) WILL BE STUDIED AND ANALYZED IN DETAIL WITH RESPECT TO INEFFECTIVE ALERTING AND INVALID SOURCE DATA, FLIGHT CREW INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS (INFORMATION SOURCES AND CONTENT WHICH ARE REQUIRED BY THE FLIGHT CREW) WILL BE DEVELOPED, AND BASELINE ACCIDENT (OFF-NOMINAL) SCENARIOS WILL BE DEFINED WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF NEXGEN OPERATIONS. BASED ON THESE ANALYSES AND REQUIREMENTS WE WILL DESIGN INFORMATION MANAGEMENT METHODS FOR INTERVENTION STRATEGIES THAT COULD REDUCE INEFFECTIVE ALERTING AND USE OF INVALID SOURCE DATA. THESE INTERVENTION STRATEGIES WILL CONSIST OF A MONITORING TASK AND A DETECTION AND MITIGATION TASK. IN TERMS OF MONITORING TASK WE WILL ADDRESS BOTH INTEGRITY MONITORS (I.E. USE OF INDEPENDENT SOURCES TO SYNTHESIZE IDENTICAL INFORMATION AND STATISTICALLY ASSESS THE DIFFERENCES) AND HOLISTIC MONITORS (I.E. USE OF AVAILABLE DISSIMILAR AND INDEPENDENT SOURCES FIND EVIDENCE OF HAZARDOUS SITUATIONS). FOR VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION PURPOSES WE WILL UPDATE OUR EXISTING SIMULINK AVIONICS MODEL BASED ON THE REQUIRED INFORMATION SOURCES (I.E. SENSORS, SWIM, WEATHER RADAR, ETC.) AND INCORPORATE THE PROPOSED IM DESIGNS IN THE MODEL. FINALLY, WE WILL STIMULATE THE MODEL WITH THE NEXTGEN ACCIDENT (OFF-NOMINAL) SCENARIOS USING BOTH OFF-LINE MONTE-CARLO RUNS AND HUMAN-IN-THE-LOOP EVALUATIONS. THE PROPOSED WORK WILL DEMONSTRATE THE NEW CONCEPTS BY ADDRESSING A SUBSET OF ALERTING ISSUES, NAMELY: FLIGHT CONDITIONS LEADING TO LOSS OF ATTITUDE STATE AWARENESS (LASA), LOSS OF ENERGY STATE AWARENESS (LESA), HAZARDOUS WEATHER OR AIRSPACE CONDITIONS, RUNWAY INCURSIONS AND EXCURSIONS, AIRPORT/AIRSPACE STATUS THROUGH WORK WITH ROCKWELL-COLLINS ASCEND PRODUCT, AND INVALID SOURCE DATA.
