    THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS TO RESEARCH AND DEVELOP HIGH-PRECISION CRATER TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING METHODS TO SYSTEMATICALLY MAP MARTIAN CRATERS OBSERVED ALONG THE TRAVERSES OF THE TWO MER MISSION ROVERS. DETAILED, HIGHLY ACCURATE CRATER MODELS WILL BE GENERATED AND MAPPING PRODUCTS HIGHLIGHTING CRATER GEOMETRIC AND SPECTRAL CHARACTERISTICS WILL BE PRODUCED AND EXAMINED. THE NEW INNOVATIVE METHODOLOGY AND SYSTEM WILL TAKE ADVANTAGES OF THE UNPRECEDENTED ORBITAL (OVERVIEW) AND GROUND (HORIZONTAL VIEW) IMAGES TO DERIVE THE BEST MAPPING PRODUCTS (IN REAL 3-D) OF THE CRATERS. THE RESULTS CAN BE EXTENDED TO IMPROVED CRATER MAPPING IN OTHER MARS REGIONS. THIS RESEARCH TASK IS NOT A PART OF PI;,S CURRENT MER MISSION PROJECT IN WHICH THE PI IS MAINLY TASKED TO PERFORM LOCALIZATION OF THE TWO ROVERS. THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO: 1) DEVELOP METHODOLOGIES FOR CRATER MODELS GENERATION AND TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING BASED ON AN INTEGRATION OF HIRISE AND MOC IMAGERY, MOLA DATA, AND GROUND-BASED PANCAM AND NAVCAM IMAGERY. 2) GENERATE VARIOUS HIGH-PRECISION CRATER PRODUCTS HIGHLIGHTING THE GEOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIVIDUAL CRATERS AND ANALYZE KEY CRATER PARAMETERS FOR CRATERS IMAGED DURING THE MER 2003 MISSION. THESE PARAMETERS WOULD INCLUDE CRATER RIM SHAPE, DEPTH, DIAMETER, WALL SLOPE, CRATER CAVITY CROSS-SECTION, AND PROMONTORYLBAY TOPOGRAPHY. CRATER MAPS GENERATED WOULD INCLUDE DIGITAL CRATER MODELS, ORTHOPHOTOS, TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS AND SLOPE MAPS. 3) GENERATE HIGH-PRECISION MAPPING PRODUCTS OF CRATER SPECTRAL CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDING MULTISPECTRAL ORTHOPHOTOS FROM PANCAM BANDS (LI-L7: 739,753,673,601,535,482 AND 432 NM; AND RI-R7: 436, 754, 803, 864, 904, 934 AND 1009 NM) AND PANCHROMATIC ORTHOPHOTO FROM NAVCAM IMAGERY. 4) SITUATE MER 2003 MICROSCOPIC IMAGER (MI) IMAGERY AND APXS DATA WITHIN TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING PRODUCTS TO SUPPORT SCIENTIFIC ANALYSES. THIS PROJECT DIRECTLY ADDRESSES THE OBJECTIVE OF THE MDAP PROGRAM ;,TO ENHANCE THE SCIENTIFIC RETURN FROM MARS MISSIONS;, BY PRODUCING HIGH-ACCURACY MAPPING PRODUCTS HIGHLIGHTING THE GEOMETRIC AND SPECTRAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MARTIAN CRATERS IMAGED DURING THE MER 2003 MISSION BASED ON DATA SETS FROM MER, MRO AND MGS MISSIONS TO SUPPORT FURTHER SCIENTIFIC ANALYSES. THE PROJECT PRODUCTS AND DEVELOPED TECHNOLOGIES WILL SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE THE SCIENTIFIC OUTPUT OF MER, MRO AND MGS MISSIONS. THE RESEARCH RESULTS WILL BENEFIT MARS SCIENCE ANALYSIS AS WELL AS THE PLANETARY SCIENCE COMMUNITY OVERALL.
