    National Aeronautics And Space Administration
    STENNIS SPACE CENTER
LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY DUAL USE AGREEMENT FOR TESTING GEOPOLYMER BINDERS IN ROCKET PLUME ENVIRONMENTSPURPOSE THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO TEST A NEW GENERATION OF MULTI-FUNCTION ALUMINA-SILICATE BASED CEMENTITIOUS BINDERS CAPABLE OF HIGH REFLECTANCE, LOW ABLATION RATE, ELEVATED CORROSION RESISTANCE AND HIGH MECHANICAL STRENGTH AS A POTENTIAL REFRACTORY MATERIAL TO BE USED IN STENNIS TEST STAND FLAME TRENCHES. THE WORK WILL BUILD ON PREVIOUS RESEARCH UNDERTAKEN BY THE RESEARCH TEAM IN THE AREAS OF GEOPOLYMERIC BINDERS, HIGH REFLECTANCE MATERIALS AND COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY OF MATERIALS BEHAVIOR IN HIGH TEMPERATURE ENVIRONMENTS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MULTI-FUNCTION, MULTI-PURPOSE, COST-EFFECTIVE, `GREEN CEMENTITIOUS BINDER CAN LEAD TO SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS ACROSS THE NASA MISSION RANGING FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOW COST, `HOT FACE REFRACTORY LINERS WITH LONGER SERVICE LIFE COMPARED WITH CURRENT COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE PRODUCTS, THROUGH A HIGH STRENGTH, CORROSION RESISTANT MATERIAL FOR THE REPAIR OF LARGE CONCRETE TEST AND LAUNCH STANDS AT SSC AND KSC THAT EXPERIENCED EXTENSIVE CORROSION RELATED DAMAGE AND ARE IN NEED OF REPAIR.A SECOND INVESTIGATION WILL LOOK AT A NEW APPLICATION THAT USES THE GEOPOLYMER BINDER AS A REFRACTORY PROTECTIVE COATING FOR STEEL PIPES TO BE USED TO CONDUCT AN EXTREMELY HIGH TEMPERATURE HYDROGEN-BASED FLUID. THE FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT WILL LOOK AT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NOVEL MORTAR COATING SYSTEM FOR THIS APPLICATION. INSTALLATION METHODS WHICH INCLUDE EXTRUDE IN PLACE, SPIN-CAST, AND MECHANICAL TROWEL, WILL BE EVALUATED FOR EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY BASED ON THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF THE COATING SYSTEM. NASA RESPONSIBILITIES NASA/SSC WILL: PERFORM THE FACILITY MODIFICATIONS AND ACTIVATION IN THE E-3 TEST AREA REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE MATERIALS TESTS. PROVIDE EXPENDABLE MATERIALS AND PROPELLANTS/FLUIDS REQUIRED TO CONDUCT THE MATERIAL TESTS. CONDUCT THE TESTS AND COLLECT THE DATA FOR ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION. PROVIDE TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING SAMPLE DESIGN AND PREPARATION. FOR THE SECONDARY STUDY, NASA WILL PROVIDE PROJECTED ENVIRONMENTS AND CONDITIONS THE MATERIAL MIGHT EXPERIENCE IN THAT APPLICATION. AGREEMENT MILESTONES FOR THE PRIMARY STUDY TIME COST ($) 1. KICKOFF MEETING WEEK 1 $0 2. NUMERICAL MODELING / BENCH-SCALE LABORATORY TESTS WEEK 6 $0 3. OPTIMIZATION OF MIX DESIGNS WEEK 8 $0 4. MATERIAL PROCUREMENTS WEEK 9 $0 5. CASTING OF SPECIMENS WEEK 10 $0 6. FIELD TESTING AT SSC WEEK 12 $0 7. DATA ANALYSIS / SPECIMENS TASTINGS WEEK 18 $0 8. 3RD PARTY TESTING WEEK 22 $0 9. CLOSEOUT&FINAL REPORT WEEK 24 $0 TOTAL NASA FUNDING: $0
