    HYDROCARBONS EMITTED FROM THE BIOSPHERE TO THE ATMOSPHERE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE FORMATION OF BOTH OXIDANTS AND AEROSOLS THAT, IN TURN, CAN INFLUENCE REGIONAL AND GLOBAL ATMOSPHERIC PROCESSES. EMERGING RESEARCH FINDINGS INDICATE, FOR EXAMPLE, THAT THE REACTION PRODUCTS OF SOME BIOGENIC HYDROCARBONS CAN LEAD TO THE FORMATION OF FINE SECONDARY ORGANIC AEROSOLS. BIOGENIC HYDROCARBONS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN REGIONAL ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY, GLOBAL ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY, AND CLIMATE PROCESSES, AS WELL AS IN IMPORTANT BIOCHEMICAL AND ECOLOGICAL PROCESSES. TO REVIEW THE EMERGING KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROCESSES LEADING TO THE EMISSION OF BIOGENIC HYDROCARBONS AND THEIR ATMOSPHERIC IMPACTS, A GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE WILL TAKE PLACE AT BATES COLLEGE IN LEWISTON, MAINE DURING JUNE 24-29, 2012. THE CONFERENCE, ENTITLED BIOGENIC HYDROCARBONS AND THE ATMOSPHERE, WILL INCLUDE KEY SESSIONS THAT COVER IMPORTANT AREAS OF EMERGING RESEARCH, INCLUDING TOPICS RELATED TO BIOSYNTHESIS OF HYDROCARBONS AND THEIR EMISSION PROCESSES, ECOSYSTEM-ATMOSPHERE EXCHANGES, AND THE ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICAL PROCESSING OF BIOGENIC EMISSIONS. IN SUPPORT OF THE CONFERENCE THEME, REACHING ACROSS SCALES- FROM THE MOLECULE TO THE GLOBE , SEVERAL CONFERENCE SESSIONS ARE BEING PLANNED THAT WILL INCLUDE JUNIOR SCIENTISTS (POST-DOCTORAL SCHOLARS, GRADUATE STUDENTS, AND JUNIOR FACULTY AND RESEARCH SCIENTISTS), INCLUDING AN ORAL SESSION DEDICATED SOLELY TO EARLY CARE R SPEAKERS. THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS TO HELP SUPPORT THE COSTS OF TRANSPORTATION AND REGISTRATION FOR THE PARTICIPATION OF THE LEADING SCIENTISTS. THE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ASPECT OF THIS CONFERENCE WILL ENABLE A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR PARTICIPANTS TO EXPERIENCE THE OVERALL CONTEXT OF SPECIFIC RESEARCH PROGRAMS. THIS CONFERENCE AND ITS FOCUS TOPICS DIRECTLY ALIGN WITH NASA S SCIENCE MISSION DIRECTORATE EARTH SCIENCE GOAL TO COORDINATE SERIES OF SATELLITE AND AIRBORNE MISSIONS FOR LONG-TERM GLOBAL OBSERVATIONS OF THE LAND SURFACE, BIOSPHERE, SOLID EARTH, ATMOSPHERE, AND OCEANS THAT WILL ENABLE AN IMPROVED UNDERSTANDING OF THE EARTH AS AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM. BECAUSE BIOGENIC HYDROCARBONS ARE A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF THE EARTH S BIOSPHERE AND PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION, CHEMISTRY AND CLIMATE, UNDERSTANDING THE EMISSIONS, THEIR CONTROLS, AND THEIR ATMOSPHERIC PROCESSING IS NECESSARY FOR ULTIMATELY CONSTRAINING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF CLIMATE VARIABILITY AND CHANGE. VARIOUS OBSERVING SYSTEMS, INCLUDING FIELD CAMPAIGNS AND SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS, ARE CRITICAL COMPONENTS TO THE RESEARCH TO QUANTIFY OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE UNDERLYING PROCESSES THAT CONTROL BIOGENIC HYDROCARBON EMISSIONS FROM THE BIOSPHERE AND THEIR ATMOSPHERIC IMPACTS. THE TOPICS ADDRESSED IN THIS CONFERENCE ARE ASSOCIATED WITH MANY OF THE ELEMENTS OF THE 2011 NASA ROSES ELEMENTS, INCLUDING LAND COVER/LAND USE CHANGE (A.2), TERRESTRIAL ECOLOGY (A.4), AND ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION (A.14, A.16, A.17). THE GOALS OF THIS PROJECT ARE: (A) TO BRING TOGETHER RESEARCH SCIENTISTS FROM A VARIETY OF DISCIPLINES, ENABLING MULTI-DISCIPLINARY INTERACTIONS THAT WILL LEAD TO RESEARCH CONNECTIONS THAT MAY OTHERWISE NOT BE REALIZED, AND (B) TO IDENTIFY AND DISCUSS THE FUTURE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES THAT ARE NEEDED TO ADDRESS CURRENT RESEARCH UNCERTAINTIES. WE EXPECT THE PARTICIPATION OF LEADING SCIENTISTS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE. THIS CONFERENCE FORMAT WILL ENCOURAGE AND OPTIMIZE THE INTERACTION AMONG JUNIOR AND SENIOR SCIENTISTS. THE INTERNATIONAL NATURE OF THIS GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE WILL BE A RARE OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS FROM THE UNITED STATES TO BECOME AWARE OF RESEARCH THAT IS TAKING PLACE ACROSS THE GLOBE. FEMALE AND MINORITY (I.E., AFRICAN- AND HISPANIC-AMERICANS) SCIENTISTS WILL BE INVITED TO PRESENT AND DISCUSS THEIR RESEARCH RESULTS.
