WE PROPOSE AN INTENSIVE INVESTIGATION OF THE MECHANISMS THROUGH WHICH THESE UNIQUE ISOTOPIC COMPOSITIONS OF METHANE ARE GENERATED IN ENVIRONMENTS ANALOGOUS TO ENVIRONMENTS WHICH MAY HAVE EXISTED IN MARS PAST, AND WHICH MIGHT EXIST ON MARS TODAY. WE WILL INVESTIGATE CRITERIA IN ADDITION TO THE METHANE ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION THAT MAY BE USED TO EVALUATE BIOGENICITY. SPECIFICALLY WE WILL: 1) FURTHER INVESTIGATE THE PROCESSES LEADING TO ISOTOPIC FRACTIONATION RESULTING IN AN APPARENT ABIOTIC SIGNAL FROM BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES PARTICULARLY FOCUSING IN DD ISOTOPES OF METHANE, 2) EXPAND THE RANGE OF ENVIRONMENTS TO THOSE WHICH HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE MORE RELEVANT TO MARS (I.E. ATACAMA), 3) EVALUATE (AND EXPAND) THE USE OF THE METHANE/ (ETHANE + PROPANE) RATIO (I.E. C1/ (C2 + C3)) FOR BIOGENICITY DETERMINATIONS IN THESE MARS ANALOG ENVIRONMENTS. OEVAPORITES
