    TERRESTRIAL GAMMA-RAY FLASHES (TGFS) ARE BRIGHT BURSTS OF GAMMA-RAYS, OBSERVED BY SPACECRAFT SUCH AS FERMI, THAT ORIGINATE FROM THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. TO DATE, ONLY ONE SELF-CONSISTENT MODEL OF TGFS EXISTS, CALLED THE RELATIVISTIC FEEDBACK DISCHARGE (RFD) MODEL. THIS MODEL EXPLAINS MANY PROPERTIES OF TGFS, INCLUDING THEIR DURATION, ENERGY SPECTRA AND MULTI-PULSED BEHAVIOR. HOWEVER, IT IS STILL RUDIMENTARY AND HAS ONLY BEEN COMPARED WITH CGRO/BATSE TGF DATA. WE PROPOSE IMPROVING THE RFD MODEL BY MAKING IT FULLY 3-D AND INCLUDING THE EFFECTS OF THE EARTH S MAGNETIC FIELD. THE CODE WILL BE PARALLELIZED AND RUN AT THE DOD HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING FACILITY. THIS WILL ALLOW, FOR THE FIRST TIME, DETAILED, SELF-CONSISTENT MODEL PREDICTIONS THAT WILL THEN BE COMPARED WITH FERMI OBSERVATIONS.

    IN THIS PROPOSAL, I DESCRIBE A COMPREHENSIVE AND DETAILED RESEARCH PLAN TO UNDERSTAND THE PRODUCTION OF THE RUNAWAY ELECTRONS INSIDE THUNDERCLOUDS, TO EXACTLY MEASURE AND MODEL THE ELECTRIC FIELD IN A THUNDERCLOUD AT THE TIME OF LIGHTNING INITIATION USING SATELLITE- AND GROUND-BASED INSTRUMENTS, AND TO MODEL THE MOST ENERGETIC RADIO FREQUENCY (RF) PULSES ON EARTH CALLED NARROW BIPOLAR EVENTS (NBES). THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS INTENDED TO LEAD TO FUNDAMENTAL ADVANCES IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF BOTH LIGHTNING PHYSICS AND THE EFFECTS OF LIGHTNING ON THE ATMOSPHERIC ELECTRICAL ENVIRONMENT WITHIN AND ABOVE THUNDERCLOUDS. THIS PLAN INCLUDES: I) AN OBSERVATIONAL COMPONENT, MEASURING THE RADIO FREQUENCY EMISSIONS PRODUCED BY RELATIVISTIC RUNAWAY ELECTRON AVALANCHES INITIATED BY COSMIC RAY EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWERS; II) AN EXPERIMENTAL COMPONENT, DEVELOPING THE REQUIRED INSTRUMENTS TO STUDY THE RADIO FREQUENCY EMISSIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE COSMIC RAY AIR SHOWERS DURING THUNDERSTORMS AND COMPACT INTRACLOUD DISCHARGES (CIDS), AT THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR LIGHTNING RESEARCH AND TESTING (ICLRT) AT CAMP BLANDING, FL; III) AND A MODELING COMPONENT, USING DETAILED MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS AND ALSO DEVELOPING AN EXPERIMENTALLY VALIDATED ANALYTICAL MODEL TO ANALYZE AND INTERPRET THE OBSERVATIONS. THIS RESEARCH PLAN IS A NATURAL CONTINUATION OF OUR LAB S CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN THE GEOSPACE PHYSICS LABORATORY (GPL) AT THE FLORIDA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, WHICH IS ONE OF THE LEADING GROUPS IN THE WORLD FOR STUDYING HIGH-ENERGY EMISSIONS FROM LIGHTNING. IN THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS, I SHALL SHOW THAT THIS RESEARCH HAS STRONG SCIENTIFIC MERIT, SINCE IT WILL FUNDAMENTALLY IMPROVE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF LIGHTNING INITIATION AND PROPAGATION. THIS PROJECT ALSO HAS SUBSTANTIAL BROADER IMPACTS, BECAUSE IT HAS IMPLICATIONS FOR DISCHARGE PHYSICS, COSMIC RAY PHYSICS, AND HIGH ALTITUDE DISCHARGES AND ALSO BECAUSE IMPROVING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF LIGHTNING PHYSICS WILL ULTIMATELY CONTRIBUTE TO IMPROVED LIGHTNING SAFETY AND PROTECTION.
