THE BARYON ACOUSTIC OSCILLATION (BAO) METHOD IS A KEY COMPONENT OF ANY STAGE IV DARK ENERGY PROGRAM, INCLUDING A POSSIBLE NASA JOINT DARK ENERGY MISSION. SOUND WAVES IN THE PLASMA OF THE EARLY UNIVERSE GET FROZEN INTO THE MATTER DISTRIBUTION WHEN THE UNIVERSE TRANSITIONS INTO A NEUTRAL STATE, IMPRINTING A CHARACTERISTIC FEATURE IN THE GALAXY CORRELATION FUNCTION. THIS FEATURE CAN BE USED AS A STANDARD RULER TO CONSTRAIN THE EXPANSION HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE, AND PROBE THE REDSHIFT EVOLUTION OF THE DARK ENERGY. HOWEVER, THE STATISTICAL PRECISION OF THE METHOD IS LIMITED BY LARGE SCALE VELOCITY FLOWS, WHICH SMOOTH OUT THE ACOUSTIC FEATURE AND REDUCE ITS CONTRAST. WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP "RECONSTRUCTION" ALGORITHMS WHICH UNDO THIS SMOOTHING, AND INCREASE THE STATISTICAL ACCURACY OF THE BAO METHOD. A FIRST SUCH ALGORITHM ALREADY EXISTS, AND HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED TO WORK, BOTH THEORETICALLY AS WELL AS ON N##]BODY SIMULATIONS. HOWEVER, CURRENT IMPLEMENTATIONS OF THIS ALGORITHM USE SYMMETRY PROPERTIES OF THE SIMULATIONS, WHICH ARE NOT REALIZED IN REAL SURVEY DATA. THE FIRST GOAL OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO EXTEND THIS ALGORITHM TO WORK ON REALISTIC SURVEY DATA WITH IRREGULAR BOUNDARIES AND MISSING DATA. WE HAVE DEMONSTRATED SUCH AN ALGORITHM IN PRINCIPLE, AND PLAN TO FURTHER REFINE IT, APPLYING TO MORE REALISTIC SIMULATIONS. WE ALSO PLAN ON EXPLORING DIFFERENT "INTERPOLATION" SCHEMES TO FILL IN MISSING DATA, TESTING TO ENSURE THAT THEY DO NOT BIAS THE STANDARD RULER. THE SECOND GOAL OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO CHARACTERIZE THE REQUIREMENTS THAT RECONSTRUCTION WOULD PLACE ON THE DESIGN OF FUTURE SURVEYS. THE FIRST OF THESE, AND THE MOST RELEVANT FOR A POSSIBLE JDEM MISSION, IS TO UNDERSTAND THE REQUIREMENT ON THE CONTIGUITY OF THE SURVEY##] WHETHER RECONSTRUCTION WORKS WITH GAPS IN THE SURVEY, AND WHAT SCALES AND SPATIAL FREQUENCIES OF GAPS CAN BE TOLERATED. WE ALSO PLAN TO UNDERSTAND HOW RECONSTRUCTION DEGRADES FOR LOW NUMBER DENSITY TRACERS, AND IF RECONSTRUCTION IS SENSITIVE TO GALAXY TYPE. THE FINAL ASPECT OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO GO BEYOND THE EXISTING ALGORITHM TO SEE IF IMPROVED RECONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES ARE POSSIBLE. A NUMBER OF ALGORITHMS EXIST FOR RECONSTRUCTING THE INITIAL LINEAR DENSITY FIELD. THE REQUIREMENTS FOR BAO RECONSTRUCTION ARE SIGNIFICANTLY EASIER. WE PLAN ON EXPLORING THESE ALGORITHMS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF BAO RECONSTRUCTION TO SEE IF ANY OF THESE PROVIDE SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE. THE ABILITY TO RECONSTRUCT THE BAO FEATURE SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES THE DARK ENERGY REACH OF REDSHIFT SURVEYS, DOUBLING EG. THE DARK ENERGY TASK FORCE FIGURE OF MERIT. THIS PROPOSAL AIMS TO DEMONSTRATE THE FEASIBILITY OF THIS TECHNIQUE AND UNDERSTAND ITS REQUIREMENTS. THESE ARE ASPECTS ESSENTIAL FOR DESIGNING THE NEXT GENERATION OF BAO EXPERIMENTS, INCLUDING POSSIBLE SPACE MISSIONS.
