THE DISSERTATIONS INITIATIVE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF CLIMATE CHANGE RESEARCH (DISCCRS, PRONOUNCED DISCOURSE) IS A LEADERSHIP PROGRAM THAT TRAINS AND EQUIPS EARLY CAREER SCIENTISTS FROM ALL AREAS OF STUDY WITH THE CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND TOOLS TO ESTABLISH OR STRENGTHEN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES IN THEIR CAREER. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION HAS SUPPORTED THIS INITIATIVE, INCLUDING FOUR SYMPOSIA FOR EARLY CAREER GRADUATES, SINCE 2002. THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS FUNDING TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE INITIATIVE. SUPPORT FROM NASA WILL FACILITATE INCLUSION OF EARLY CAREER SCHOLARS WHO ARE INVOLVED IN RESEARCH CENTRAL TO THE NASA MISSION, SUCH AS REMOTE SENSING. IT WILL ALSO EXPOSE SCHOLARS WHO ARE NOT CURRENTLY SUPPORTED BY NASA TO THE NASA MISSION, RESEARCH AND OPPORTUNITIES, AND FACILITATE DEVELOPMENT OF COLLEGIAL NETWORKS THAT INCLUDE BOTH NASA AND NSF SCHOLARS. DISCCRS INCLUDES THREE INTEGRAL COMPONENTS: WEBPAGE: AN OPEN-ACCESS WEBPAGE, HTTP://DISCCRS.ORG, INTRODUCES SCHOLARS TO THE GLOBAL RESEARCH COMMUNITY. THE DISCCRS SITE WILL LINK SCHOLARS TO THE NASA AND NSF HOME SITE, AS WELL AS ANY OTHER PAGES THAT THE AGENCY PROGRAM OFFICERS WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT. ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER: A WEEKLY E-NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTES CLIMATE RESEARCH NEWS, PROFESSIONAL RESOURCES, MEETINGS, INTERDISCIPLINARY JOB POSTINGS AND OTHER TIME-SENSITIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS OF INTEREST TO EARLY CAREER SCHOLARS. THIS NEWSLETTER PROVIDES A MECHANISM FOR NASA AND NSF TO DISTRIBUTE TIME-SENSITIVE INFORMATION, SUCH AS CALLS FOR PROPOSALS, TO A TARGET COMMUNITY OF EARLY CAREER CLIMATE RESEARCH SCHOLARS. INTERDISCIPLINARY SYMPOSIA: ANNUAL SYMPOSIA BRING TOGETHER COHORTS OF NEW PHOS WHO ARE LIKELY TO BECOME LEADERS IN THE AREA OF INTERDISCIPLINARY CLIMATE RESEARCH AT THE INTERFACE OF SCIENCE AND SOCIETY. SCHOLARS SELECTED THROUGH A COMPETITIVE APPLICATION PROCESS MEET THEIR PEERS TO ESTABLISH LIFE-LONG COLLEGIAL RELATIONSHIPS AND ARE EXPOSED TO THE FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE. AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR FUTURE INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH. PROGRAM OFFICERS FROM THE SPONSORING AGENCIES (NASA AND NSF) ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SYMPOSIA TO GET TO KNOW THE NEW COHORTS OF EMERGING CLIMATE CHANGE SCHOLARS, AND TO INFORM THEM OF THE AGENCY MISSION. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES, PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE AGENCY'S PROPOSAL REVIEW PROCESS.
